1) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2) For by it the elders obtained a good report.

Amplified Version (AMP)

1) Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses]. 

2) For by this [kind of] faith the [a] men of old gained [divine] approval.

***[a] i.e. those men and women who were faithful to God before the old covenant and those faithful to God after its establishment, those mentioned in this chapter.

***[a] Jesus used this moment to emphasize to the disciples that a person’s confident, abiding faith combined with God’s power can produce absolutely amazing results, if the request is in harmony with God’s will. God is fully capable of doing that which man regards as impossible (Mark 14:36; James 4:3).

26) For just as the [human] body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works [of obedience] is also dead.
